Lewis Bott (School of Psychology, Cardiff University) will give a talk on inferences and implications in language.

After the talk, there will be the opportunity to have small-group or one-to-one discussions with dr. Bott.

This event is a Meet the PhD Jury Event, funded by the Doctoral Schools.

Most people think of communication as involving words and grammar. But we also have the ability to go beyond linguistic material and make inferences and implications. We can, for example, imply that someone is unattractive by saying that they have “a nice personality”, even though attractive people can also have nice personalities, and infer that an “incremental” research bid has low novelty, even though ground-breaking research also increments understanding. Communication, then, requires something more than processing what we can see and hear, something more than the ‘visible’ input. There must be rules and representations that allow us to extract the ‘invisible’ meaning. In this talk I present a series of psycholinguistics experiments investigating what these rules and representations must be.
