What 

The postgraduate course in Dutch and Translation offers students the opportunity to devote themselves to intensive study of the Dutch language, while simultaneously gaining further expertise in translation techniques and/or studying new languages.

This is a one year academic programme, unique in Belgium's Dutch-speaking region. The international postgraduate certificate in Dutch and Translation awarded to candidates successfully completing the course will position them ideally for a professional career in the Flanders Region or the Netherlands, or for an international role where knowledge of the Dutch language is desirable or essential.

For whom

This course provides students with a sound foundation in the Dutch language, equipping them to launch out on a professional career in a Dutch-speaking country. The Dutch lessons are intended for highly qualified candidates.

The course has been developed with the aim of providing students with the necessary background, expertise and skills to work as translators, on a freelance basis or as employees within a business.

The course will also be of interest to those aiming to work for an international organization, be it the United Nations, the European Commission, NATO, an embassy or a multinational, as a translator, subtitler, dubbing or voice-over specialist, proofreader, copywriter or terminologist. The course will also be highly relevant to sectors such as the media, marketing, editorial work or sales.

The course is taught in both Dutch and English.

Structure

The study programme amounts to 60 credits in total:

• 30 ECTS aim at a thorough acquisition of the Dutch language. The language courses are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
• 10 ECTS consist of 2 general theoretical courses to give an introduction into the scientific field of Applied Language Studies and into the legal, organizational and translational aspects of the multilingual European institutions.
• 20 ECTS go to 4 elective courses that address the scientific discipline of Translation Studies (e.g. Audiovisual Translation) and/or focus on your personal interests (e.g. digital communication, ...)

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in languages (or an academic degree of a programme having a significant language component)

• English: CEFR level B2

• Dutch: No language requirements
