Sports as a tool for social reintegration of prisoners: a social work perspective

PhD student: Marie-Lou Libbrecht
Summary: The reintegration of prisoners is an important social issue. This leads to the organisation of programmes to support prisoners in the reintegration process. From the academic disciplines of social work and sports sociology, knowledge gaps emerge; such as the lack of knowledge from an insider's perspective of prisoners; lack of knowledge about various life domains that can contribute to reintegration, such as sports; lack of research outside the criminological discipline, reducing integration to prevention of recidivism, etc. This research addresses these gaps from a social work theoretical perspective on social reintegration. Through a multiple case study of five sports programmes in five different prisons across Flanders and Brussels, a programme theory on the working mechanisms of sports programmes in prison is developed from a social work research perspective.
