XXIX International hamster workgroup meeting

XXIX International hamster workgroup meetingWe are proud to invite experts working in all fields of biology, ecology and conservation of the European hamster (Cricetus cricetus) and/or other species of hamsters to present results of their work at the 29th Hamster Meeting in Brussels, Belgium on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 October 2022 (hybrid).

Initially this meeting was to be held in Kyiv Zoo, Ukraine in September 2022. The Russian War in Ukraine, and the human tragedy to which it led, rendered the organization of the meeting impossible. Against this tragic backdrop, we still hope to guarantee the continuity of the yearly Hamster workgroup meeting. We will host the meeting in support of our Ukrainian colleagues, who – we hope – will make it through this war unscathed. We express our deepest sympathy to all the innocent victims that fell in Ukraine as a result of pointless violence and atrocities.

The address of the meeting venue on 12 October 2022 is Havenlaan 88, 1000 Brussels (Herman Teirlinck building of the Flemish Government). The login details for online participation will be communicated in due course. The meeting will start at 9.30AM with a key note speech, followed by  presentations grouped per topic and will end around 5.30PM. Lunch and coffee breaks will be provided. In the evening of the 12th, we will try to organize a social event, for those who are interested (details will follow).

On the second day, 13 October 2022 we organize a field trip, lunch and closing debate in the land of Haspengouw (by bus from Brussels, Havenlaan 88 at 9AM and back to Brussels, Havenlaan 88 by 4PM). This day no online participation will be possible.

Main topics of the meeting will be:

  • Monitoring of wild populations
  • Captive breeding
  • Reintroduction
  • Genetics
  • Conservation
  • Biology
  • Ecology
